Programme objectives: On completion of the programme participants will have: - An understanding of and practical experience in the use of common generic applications
Outline Training Plan: Diagram of module titles, their sequence of delivery and the balance of time in days and weeks Information Technology: Basic concepts of Information technology including health and safety issues as well as environmental factors involved in using computers will be discussed and, in addition, the learner will be aware of some of the important security and legal issues associated with using computers. In the next unit the learner will demonstrate knowledge and competence in using the common functions of the computer. The learner will be able to operate effectively within the desktop environment and work with desktop icons and windows. Simple editing tools and print management facilities available within the operating system are also covered in this module and the learner will discover what a virus is and be able to use virus-scanning software. In the word processing unit the learner will be required to demonstrate the ability to accomplish everyday tasks associated with creating, formatting and finishing small-sized word processing documents. S/he will develop and demonstrate competence in using some of the features associated with word processing applications such as creating standard tables, using pictures/images within a document and using mail merge tools. The last unit in the IT module is information and communication. The first section, Information, brings the learner to an understanding of some of the concepts and terms associated with using the Internet. The learner will be able to accomplish some common Web search tasks using a web-browsing application. In the second section, Communication, the learner is required to understand some of the concepts of electronic mail (e-mail), together with having an appreciation of some of the security considerations associated. S/he will also demonstrate the ability to send and receive messages and to attach files to mail messages. Computer Applications The spreadsheets unit requires the learner to understand the concept of spreadsheets and to demonstrate the ability to use a spreadsheet application on a computer and be able to perform tasks associated with creating, formatting, modifying and using a spreadsheet. S/he will also be able to generate and apply standard mathematical and logical formulae using standard functions and formulae and, furthermore, will be able to create and format graphs and charts. The learner is required to understand some of the main concepts of databases and demonstrate the ability to use a database on a computer. The learner will be able to create and modify tables, queries, forms and reports. In addition, s/he will be able to relate tables and to retrieve and manipulate information from a database by using query and sort tools available in the package. The learner will also demonstrate competence in using presentation tools on a computer. Tasks involved include creating, formatting, modifying and preparing presentations using different slide layouts for display and printing purposes. The learner will discover how to duplicate and move text, pictures, images and charts within the presentation and between presentations in addition to learning how to use various slide show effects. |
